The Open Source Initiative (OSI) is a non-profit corporation
I believe that on a near future computer programs will be made for all Operating Systems (OS), no matter your OS is you just need to install any program on your computer.
Programming languages will be made for all kinds of OS. Will be programs that choose the better way to install it on the computer not the user.
It is possible to see that already : Java, Perl, HTML and other languages are written no matter what OS will be used. Appications are writen for internet browsers (I.E., Firefox, Opera) OS's should be able to run browsers.
On a near future most software will be free as knowledge is today, all you need to know is to know how to get it.
But why so many people still uses Microsoft (MS) programs on their computers ?
The answer is simple : Ignorance. People do not know that can do things with tools other than MS OS's and programs. Mentality : You are not suposed to choose the OS that cames with your computer it is imposed. You are not free to choose.

Wrong ideas about Linux : Top

-*- Is an O.S. that is just for programming gurus, not for normal people.
    - On 1990's maybe was a good point, not today. Nowadays some Linux distros are much more easy and fast to install than MS Windows (MSW).
-*- Is a very good and stable system for servers, not for desktops.
    - An old idea, actualy many Linux distros have very good desktops, Internet is always faster than MSW
-*- I don't know how to work on Linux programs.
    - Again an old and bad idea. Today almost all programs are standard ones and there aren't great differences between O.S.'s
-*- I don't want anything complicated, I need just to send/receive some emails, write some texts, and surf on the internet so Linux is not for me.
    - Linux is the right O.S. for you it have all the programs for free.
-*- Ok I'm convinced, but all my files are on Windows, I can't have suddenly another OS. What about my files, all my work ?
    - With "GRUB" (great unified boot loader) you can have a dual boot computer. You can     split your disk on two parts and have both OS working. You can also access the Windows disk and files.

OK, let's talk about Linux Ubuntu :
http://ubuntuguide.org
(Those tips assume that you have the basic acknowledge of the Linux operating system particulary Debian "distros")
0 - Before start with these steps save all your important documents
0,a) - Save it on a pen on a disc on a web site, no matter, but save it !!

1. If you want "dual boot" ( Ubuntu & Windows ) you must divide your disk on two
    a) First install Windows - 2000 / XP / Vista - and leave space for Ubuntu ( at least 30, 40, GB ), but the more the better ...
1.a) If you have already all your disk space ocupied with Win you can use the Ubutu instalation disk, Partition Magic or other program that you can google on the internet to resize your disk. Don't forget that you MUST KNOW WHAT YOU'RE DOING
1.b) To install Ubuntu within your MS Windows system I recommend to use VMWare Server  (download it here for free)VMWare Server, you can have virtual machines inside your computer
You can build a virtual machine that works as a real one "inside" the real one
( you can choose 1.a) or 1.b) next steps are the same)
2. Insert Ubuntu disk on driver ( you can download it here : VMWare home site : Search this symbol to get the free vmware server
a) Chose the free space that you have left free to install Ubuntu
a-1)  - be very careful with this tools you should realy know what you're doing -
unless your machine is a virtual one that you can build with VMWare
you have all freedom with easy to install or remove : VMWare.com
b) Let the system do it all, chose the option : "Use free space to install ..."
3. Open a terminal and type : sudo apt-get update or click the update icon (this may take some minutes to appear)
4. To be able to view video files or DVD files, install Google Earth, and other things you must install Automatix (get it here) : VMWare home site : Search this symbol to get the free vmware server and look for "install 7.04" or 7.10 (every six months Canonical provides a new version of the OS)
Select : aMSN, AUD-DVD Codecs, Flash Player, RealPlayer, Automatix Read/Write NFS and fat32 Mounter (to be able to read/write on MS Windows disks) Google Earth, Google Desktop, aMule, Check Gmail and many more programs to suite your needs, remember all for free.
To be able to have a 3D desktop with many features install also Beryl (nedeed for version 7.04), rememeber that you have to have a very good computer with many resources. ( ->
after Ubuntu 8.04 development of Automatix has been discontinued )

VMWare home site : Search this symbol to get the free vmware serverVMWare home site : Search this symbol to get the free vmware serverVMWare home site : Search this symbol to get the free vmware serverVMWare home site : Search this symbol to get the free vmware server

You MUST memorize this to use on command line * : sudo apt-get : (super user do get application/program/update) install - update (most importants)
examples : sudo apt-get install xmms : (installs the xmms audio mp3 program)
sudo apt-get update : (updates O.S.) apt-cache search apt-get remove apt-get upgrade
apt-get dist-upgrade apt-get autoclean
* : Using the command line makes the OS work faster, because no graphical environment is used.
Key words, themes, concepts, commands, etc that you may google to solve problems :
Ubuntu 7.10, gconf-editor, sudo apt-get, update, places, system, X11, Gnome, KDE, Fluxbox,

You may need guides to help you to install the OS
If you're already an Ubuntu 7.04 user you just need (or not) to upgrade to 7.10 version.
VMWare home site : Search this symbol to get the free vmware serverVMWare home site : Search this symbol to get the free vmware server
On Linux besides distros you may also choose between design "flavours" :
Gnome , KDE, Fluxbox, XFCE , iceWM, FVWM-Crystal, and others even Linux distros similar to XP and Vista, you may pick your own OS colors, how it works, how it looks, you are able to have your own computer system not one equal to millions. The Linux people call it freedom.

You may listen about KDE, Gnome or XFCE Linux distros. Those are the main Linux kinds of environments. You can choose what is the one you like most.
Forget about those loooong Windows updates !! Linux is fast !! Linux is better !!

Imagine that you can email programmers to change an application to suite better your needs. Or you can just use all the free programs within Linux OS
You don't have to search and google and finaly to pay applications that you need.
Don't buy it on the store ( don't forget anti-virus).
Just ask for it on your Linux distro repositories.

Remember : Linux isn't Windows nor Machintosh.
Linux has is own personality, other solutions for same problems.
Find different ways to do things, faster Internet, other graphics, more choices, different environments. Enlarge your computers view.

Linux Distros :
Top
http://www.linux.org/dist/
Those Linux distros are the ones that I found more interesting for use on a business and/or desktop.

You have many choices ...
If you have an old machine with poor resources try Puppy Linux, Zenwalk4.8, Xubuntu, Fluxubuntu, Beafanatix.
Strong and stable Fedora, Suse, Slackware,
Think that every distribution does the very same things.

You just choose the distro that suite all your computer needs. Dont forget you still have Windows and you can work on with Linux on Windows files .

My sugestions :

* recover your old PC with :

http://damnsmalllinux.org

(basic features)
As this distribution's name implies, it's small and fast. Damn Small Linux (DSL for short)
only takes up 50 MB of hard drive space and needs a mere 128 MB of memory.
You can even run it off of a USB key.
Damn Small LinuxDSL packs a lot into a small space, though.
It has a simple but complete graphical environment (either the Fluxbox or JWM window managers)
with dozens of applications, including a word processor and text editors, Web and Internet software,
and applications for playing multimedia files. You can even use DSL as a Web server.
That's a lot of flexibility in such a small package.
While the GUI and applications aren't the prettiest or the most powerful, they do get the job done.

Xubuntu

Ubuntu is widely considered to be one of the most user-friendly desktop Linux distributions around.
It's easy to use and very flexible. But, it also requires a considerable amount of horsepower in order to run.
Most of that is involved in running Ubuntu's window managers -- GNOME and KDE.
However, Xubuntu brings the ease of use, flexibility, and power of Ubuntu to older computers.

Gentoo - www.gentoo.org

What is Gentoo?
( not tested yet Jan.2008)

Gentoo is a free operating system based on either Linux or FreeBSD that can be automatically
optimized and customized for just about any application or need. Extreme configurability,
performance and a top-notch user and developer community are all hallmarks of the Gentoo experience.

Thanks to a technology called Portage, Gentoo can become an ideal secure server,
development workstation, professional desktop, gaming system, embedded solution
or something else -- whatever you need it to be. Because of its near-unlimited adaptability,
we call Gentoo a metadistribution.

Of course, Gentoo is more than just the software it provides. It is a community built around a
distribution which is driven by more than 300 developers and thousands of users.
The distribution project provides the means for the users to enjoy Gentoo: documentation, infrastructure
(mailinglists, site, forums ...), release engineering, software porting, quality assurance, security followup,
hardening and more.

To advise on and help with Gentoo's global development, a 7-member council is elected on a yearly
basis which decides on global issues, policies and advancements in the Gentoo project.

What is Portage?

Portage is the heart of Gentoo, and performs many key functions. For one, Portage is the software
distribution system for Gentoo. To get the latest software for Gentoo, you type one command: emerge --sync.
This command tells Portage to update your local "Portage tree" over the Internet.
Your local Portage tree contains a complete collection of scripts that can be used by Portage to create
and install the latest Gentoo packages. Currently, we have more than 10000 packages in our Portage tree,
with updates and new ones being added all the time.

Portage is also a package building and installation system. When you want to install a package,
you type emerge packagename, at which point Portage automatically builds a custom version of
the package to your exact specifications, optimizing it for your hardware and ensuring that the
optional features in the package that you want are enabled -- and those you don't want aren't.

Portage also keeps your system up-to-date. Typing emerge -uD world -- one command --
will ensure that all the packages that you want on your system are updated automatically.
